Eugene A. Merrill
April 25, 1937 - June 11th, 2026

Eugene Arther Merrill, of Grand Junction, Michigan passed away on June 11th, 2026 shortly after his 89th birthday. Gene was born on April 25, 1937, the oldest of six children, to Floyd and Pauline (Rienstra) Merrill of Grand Junction, Michigan. United in marriage to the late Mieko Harumi on May 21, 1962.

Gene is survived by siblings Kenneth (Fran) Merrill, Delores Gaffney, Donald (Roxann) Merrill, and Carl Merrill.

Preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Mieko, parents Floyd and Pauline Merrill and sister Donna Strandy.

Gene graduated in 1955 from South Haven High School, South Haven Michigan. After graduation he joined the Navy to support our country.

Gene served 32 years active duty in top leadership positions. Serving duties as Chief of the Boat. {USS Bone Fish SS-582 and USS Darter SS-576}. Finishing active duty as Command Chief of Submarine Squadron Seven. Retiring in 1986.

As the Chief of the Boat (COB – of the Boat) he was recognized for his communication with the commanding officers and the crew of the boat. As well as instill leadership in the crew and promote effectiveness and efficiency throughout the chain of command.

Following retirement from the Navy, he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, South Haven Michigan. As he left the Auxiliary Coast Guard, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his wife. He will always be remembered for the many great submarine stories and being there as a brother.
