To give you an idea of one of the good things that happen from having the Tiru Association along with Tiru’s historical data – an abridged version of correspondence held with the daughter of a deceased Tiru shipmate follows (we frequently receive similar requests):
Inquiry:
“My Father died in 1977. I don;t know the dates he was on the USS
Tiru. Just looking for any information, photos, etc. that may be available.”

Response:
“One of the primary purposes for us to maintain the USS Tiru SS416 website is to assist family members in learning about the history of former Tiru crew-members. Thanks you for your inquiry.

Our records show that Petty Officer Third Class Edward L. Olivett served on Tiru from 1 June 1956 to 6 December 1957. His rating was Sonarman. Petty Officer Olivett qualified in submarines on-board USS Tiru on 17 April 1957. During his time on Tiru, Tiru completed an extensive overhaul, a western pacific deployment (6 March 1957 - 9 September 1957). During this "WestPac", Tiru conducted two Special Operations which included very difficult surveillance operations in Soviet waters; especially for the Sonarmen. These formally Top Secret (1957) operations have recently been declassified.

I have found one photo (attached) with Olivett identified. He is probably in some of the other 1957 photos. His name is listed on some of the holiday menus posted on Tiru website. If you select the photo button on Tiru's home page (www.usstiru.org), then select the "1944-1960" button, then select "1957 WestPac" button, you will find many photos (and the holiday menus) taken during the time you father was on-board. Maybe you can identify him in some of these photos. If you find him let me know and I will see if I have a better quality version of the photo in our records.

If you would like, I will post a request for information regarding your father in the Inquires section of Tiru's website. I will have any replies sent to me and then forward on to you if they appear legitimate.”
Reply:
“Thank you so much for your voice message, e-mail and the photo! I have
enjoyed looking at all the photos on the Tiru website. There is another
photo that may be of my dad but I will show it to my mom, to be certain.
My father suffered a massive heart attack on June 1, 1977 and passed away on
the 3rd. He was only 42, my brother 16 and I 11. The dog we had when I was
young was named Tiru. My son, now 26, wears my father's Navy Pea Coat and it
fits as though it were tailored for him. He is very much like my dad, not
only in stature and some facial features but also in wit and sense of humor.
If you would indeed post a request for any information, stories, etc. I
would be so grateful. My mother said he had a good friend, Jerry D. (JD)
McWilliams from Lawrence, KS. It is nice to see him in the photo with my
dad. She also recalls him speaking very fondly of his Captain. “

COMING SOON TO YOUR WEBSITE:

We are still planning to open a section of the website for small stores (those items that were left over from previous reunions, TIRU challenge coins, lanyards etc. As the intent is to make this stuff available to our shipmates the small stores section will be placed in the Members Only section. Should be open soon - as soon as I get off my butt and get some photos taken (I said this last year; Guess I have a real heavy butt)- Bill
