Cold War Submarine Veteran, Daniel T. Simcox, 87 of Dubuque, Iowa was born on November 24, 1935, in Rock Island, IL and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 28, 2023.
Mass will be on October 21, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Military honors by the Dubuque Marine Corps League will follow mass. Continued fellowship at Moracco Supper Club following the honors. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.
Daniel was raised in East Moline, IL. He attended United Township High School and served as a submariner for the United States Navy. Dan received his degree from Northern Illinois University. He was a long-time employee of Olive-Harvey Community College in Chicago, IL.
Dan was a member of the Elks Club and American Legion. He was a long-time serving member of the Community Colleges of Chicago Teachers Union.
Preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Thomas, and siblings: Donna, Thomas and Timothy.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Colette (Bercier), whom he married at St. Cajetan Church in Chicago, IL on September 19, 1959. In their 64 years of marriage, they had five children: Dana (Lisa), Anthony (Mae), Jeff (Paula), Andy (Ann) and Chris (Joyce). Dan and Colette are blessed with 18 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, who adored their ‘Papa Dan’. Dan also has numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
The ‘Big Watosh’ loved the Northwoods of Wisconsin and treasured his time spent up North with his dear longtime friends and family. He was a 40+ year seasonal resident of Ballard Lake, in Star Lake, Wisconsin.
When he wasn’t golfing, fishing, or playing tennis, he was looking forward to his next crossword puzzle, game of cards, and a cold beer at the pub.
Dan qualified in submarines on the USS Tiru (SS-416) in 1955 and was a SO3(SS) when he left the Navy.
He was a member of Treasure Coast Base of USSVI.
