Captain Elliott (Eli) Carroll, UNSR (ret) died 11 July 2004 at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Captain Carroll was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served on the USS Tiru (SS416) as a Lieutenant during 1951 and 1952. Captain Carroll also served on the USS S-45 (SS-156), the USS Sawfish (SS276), as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Surface Division 6-23 (Durham, NC) and as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Submarine Division 5-8 (Washington, DC). Captain Carroll was born on 14 May 1923 in Durham, North Carolina and graduated from Harvard University where he also received a master's degree in architecture. He joined the Navy in December 1942 and retired in June 1975. Captain Carroll is survived by his wife Dorothy G. Carroll.
Captain Carroll an architect in civilian life, retired in the 1980's as Executive Assistant to the Architect of the Capitol. He was a former member of the National Capital Memorial Commission. During his Washington career, he had a private consulting practice in historic preservation and served on teams of restoration consultants worldwide. Captain Carroll was a former treasurer and mayor of the Village of Drummond, Maryland.
