History: Operation Swift Move--68, 24 Jul to 5 Aug 68

The scenario for Swift Move--68 was a deteriorating situation in Southeast Asia which would force a withdrawal of U.S. Naval Forces. Enemy submarines were expected to be encountered in Bashi Channel and to the East and Northeast. During this exercise TIRU was assigned to seek out and intercept an ASW Group and, once hot war was declared, make all attempts to destroy it. On 2 August the ASW Group was sighted and TIRU successfully simulated an attack on USS Bennington (CVS 20). Interaction with ASW forces placed TIRU out of action for that phase.  The next day TIRU again located the ASW Group and accomplished successful attacks on Bennington, USS Ramsey (DEG-2) and USS Cunningham (DD-752) before being placed out of action by the remaining ASW units. No further significant activity.
