Captain Earl DeWispelaere, US Navy (ret)
We had no opportunities to make rescues. We did observe one of our aircraft go down inward of the barrier islands, where we could not have gone due to depth of water - probably not even on the surface. Fortunately, while we were discussing the options, we saw an ALBATROSS SAR aircraft fly in and apparently make a pickup. When we returned to Subic Bay two weeks later, we read about that rescue in LIFE magazine! Maneuvering all day long with 15-20 feet of water under the keel was an interesting experience, as was dodging fishing boats all night in deeper water while snorkeling to charge batteries.
